What to Expect at Your First Orthodontic Visit

Walking into an orthodontic office for the first time can feel like a lot, whether you’re bringing your seven-year-old for an early evaluation or finally making that appointment you’ve been putting off for yourself. Here’s the thing: the first visit is actually the easiest one.

At Meinhardt Orthodontics, Dr. Meinhardt and Dr. Jacobson keep that first conversation simple. No pressure, no surprises. The goal is to understand your smile, answer your questions, and make sure you leave with a clear picture of what comes next.

What Happens During Your Consultation

Your first visit starts with a conversation. Our team wants to know what brought you in, what you’re hoping to achieve, and whether you have any concerns about treatment. From there, we take digital scans and photos of your teeth and jaw. No goopy impression trays. Just fast, comfortable imaging that gives us a precise look at your bite and alignment.

Dr. Meinhardt or Dr. Jacobson will then review the scans with you and walk through what they’re seeing. If treatment makes sense, they’ll explain your options, give you an idea of timeline, and cover what to expect financially. Nothing gets scheduled without your input.

Do Kids Need a Referral?

Nope. You can reach out directly to schedule a consultation for your child. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that kids see an orthodontist around age seven, not because treatment always starts then, but because it gives our orthodontists a chance to spot anything worth watching before it becomes harder to address.

Many kids leave that first visit with a simple “let’s check back in a year.” That’s a great outcome. You’ll have peace of mind and we’ll have a baseline.

What to Bring

If your child has dental records or recent X-rays, feel free to bring those along. If not, no worries. We’ll gather what we need at your appointment. If you have dental insurance, having your card handy helps us look into your benefits on the spot.

What Comes After

After your consultation, you’ll get a clear treatment recommendation along with pricing and payment options. There’s no obligation to start treatment that day. A lot of families take a few days to think it over. We’re here when you’re ready.
